DIY: Custom Computer Monitor Stand

DIY weekend jobs are not only fun, they are satisfying, solve problems and creates unique products you can proudly call your own. Inspired by Ugmonk, this is a project I did a few months ago but never got the chance to post. A custom computer monitor stand for my 30" iMac. As many of you may know, an iMac does not enable you to adjust the height of the monitor. What was Steve Jobs thinking? In terms of ergonomics this is not ideal as your monitor should always be at eye level. So here is my solution. It's much more stylish solution than using a stack of yellow pages. A weekend project totalling only $29.99 excluding your own labour cost. Well, that's provided you don't go crazy like me in selecting a rare piece of wood that can cost you an arm and leg. Just can't help myself. Feel in love with this piece and just had to have it.

What do you need?

  • A block of wood. Width and length depends on your preference and table. Minimum depth should be 20cm or the depth of your monitor. I selected to use a very expensive piece of wood I fell in love with. You can do the same thing using EKBY TRYGGVE Ikea shelves for only $9.99. If you want to find that unique piece of wood and am from Sydney a great place to visit is Trend Timber in Mulgrave. It's a bit of a drive but totally worth it.
  • Stands. I opted for Ikea Capita 12cm height at $20 for a pack of 4.
  • Stain for the wood or furniture wax. If you have opted for expensive wood, furniture wax will seal and protect the surface. Otherwise polyurethane with your desired tint should do the trick.
  • Electric drill.
  • Sand paper.

Drilling on the legs was tough. So tough it broke our drill bit :( That's the difference between sourcing your own $$ wood and Ikea :P
