The things you never knew about Fitness Lonnie

An inside look into the man behind Fitness Lonnie. Lonnie Millman who prefers to be called Fitness Lonnie or The Bicep or FL or The Player, is one hilarious human being. If you haven't seen his videos where have you been? For the first time ever we've been given the opportunity to really get to know the real Lonnie. You'll be surprised to find a side to the man no one ever knew. Now we only love him more.

Tell us a little about yourself. We all know you're an “elite” crossfitter and “internet celebrity” however what’s the real Fitness Lonnie really like? Are you really a Fitness Model and Bodybuilder? What do you do when you aren’t Crossfitting or just being elite.

I meditate daily, enjoy reading Ralph Waldo Emerson, and spend a lot of time in solitude.  When I meet people who only know me from the internet, it's common for their first question to be, "What's wrong?  Are you tired?"  I'm a laid back guy, not nearly as wired as my youtube character.  I live an unusual life.  I haven't had a fixed residence since 2008.  My honda civic was my "mobile home" for the last 5 years, but I recently sold it, so I'm learning a whole new way to live.  I slept on a sidewalk for the first time a few weeks ago in Solana Beach, CA.  It wasn't as bad as you might think.  It was a clear night and I laid there watching the moon slowly pass between palm trees.  I was by the beach, so the cool Pacific breeze and crashing waves created a soothing ambiance.  When laying on a sidewalk, though, the pressure points do get a little tinder, considering concrete doesn't have much give.  It's no Tempur-Pedic.

How long have you been Crossfitting? And where is your home box? I assumed there is a home box?

I've been CrossFitting off and on for the past 3 years.  I am not a hard core CrossFitter.  I don't know any of my PRs or the times of my benchmark workouts.  The closest thing to a home box is my brother's garage in North Carolina; it's where I started CrossFitting, but I don't train anywhere on a regular basis.

How and when did Fitness Lonnie start? Have you ever attended any acting classes or are you just naturally good?

Aw, shucks.  You think I'm good do ya?  I created Fitness Lonnie while I was living as a volunteer on a self sustainable organic farm in northern California.  It was just me and the owners out in the middle of nowhere, so my camera was the only outlet I had to sooth my compulsion to entertain.  I decided to create a satire of those narcissistic, idiotic gym rats who try to teach people how to get fit, but have no idea what they are talking about.  I wanted him to come across as sincere in his efforts to help people, but horribly awkward on camera.  I also wanted people to think he was a real person, so my first few videos were pretty tame, but it wasn't long before I got too silly with it.

I've been performing in some fashion since I was a kid.  In fact the videos I was making with our family camcorder, when I was 11, look a lot like my Fitness Lonnie videos.  I haven't changed much.  I'm not sure if that's a good thing. While I was studying at Florida State University, I took a few acting classes and performed regularly with a local improv troupe. I also acted in a lot of student films which are cringeworthy evidence that I was not "naturally good."  But, I've always found a way to perform whether it's on stage in a theatre, on a farm with my flip cam, or with a mic during a CrossFit competition.

How do you come up with your crazy scripts and how do you rope in all the elite Crossfitters?

My videos are always a collaborative process.  I can’t take full credit for any of them.  I usually just meet up with people and we come up with something on the spot, or I brainstorm ideas with my brother or my friends right before I shoot something.  To me making videos feels a lot like how it felt to build a cushion fort and play war with my buddies when I was a kid.  People like to play and be creative.  Even elite CrossFitters.  I think a lot of people are missing that in their lives.

For those of us who want to be as “Elite” as you, what would you recommend? This can be anything from nutrient, to training etc.

The key to being as elite is to keep saying you are elite over and over again on multiple social networking sites until people believe it.

You've been missing in action? What happened? Is Fitness Lonnie just something you do on the side for fun? Will we be seeing more of Fitness Lonnie?

I've been at a Vipassana meditation center for the past 8 months.  I decided to take time off training my body to focus solely on training my mind. I tend to take things to the extreme... even meditation. I either completely immerse myself in something or don't do it at all.  I'm working on that. All that meditation has left me incredibly de-conditioned.  I'm thinking about doing a Fitness Lonnie Re-Elite tour where I travel around to CrossFit gyms and document the CF community helping FL get back his eliteness.

Yes, Fitness Lonnie is just a hobby.  He keeps me entertained.  I MC CrossFit competitions occasionally, and that keeps me fed.

I've noticed the come back is aligned with your Life as RX sponsorship? How did this start? Do they give you free reign?

The Life AsRx guys have been supportive since I first started making videos geared towards the CrossFit community.  I toured around with them during the 2012 regionals, so we spent 6 weeks on the road together.  They're good friends.  I've been sleeping on the couch in their warehouse for the past week.  They're happy to have some media content and I like to have a place to sleep, so it's a symbiotic relationship.  In regards to what I create, they support whatever crazy ideas I think up.  It's great.

Tell us about the Granite Games and what is your involvement in it? Will you be competing?

Competing!? Ha!  I'm MCing it, and will probably get winded just talking about other people doing workouts. It's going to be a great event. They're bringing out two of my closest CrossFit companions to compete: Maddy Curley and Andrea Ager. I've got so much love for those ladies. I'm also going to shoot some stuff with Jackie Perez.  I call her the CrossFit Bad Girl because she's always using expletives and has the general air of a trouble maker.  She's my official date to the competition, but with Maddy and Andrea also competing who knows what kind of shenanigans we'll get into.

Last question. I just have to ask this one, as I’m sure all fans around the world would want to know. Are Maddy Curly and you really…. You know??

I'm working on it.
